Window to the Future

Using AR to peek into the futures.

Sunny days are rare in Denmark, so when the sun comes out, it’s important to make the most out of it.

Using AR to take a peek into the futures.

In the act of speculating about the future, we change the future. Be it utopic or dystopic, imaginary versions for the future of society are common devices to translate our fears and aspirations about contemporary reality. Over a three-week intensive dive into Mixed Reality at CIID, we designed a AR tool that reads the future of everyday objects and hints at the infinite possibilities that are embedded in every time and space.

Knowing about the sun’s whereabouts throughout the day can be essential to survive the long danish winter, but this is not the kind of information that is easily accessible to newcomers. Prompted with the brief to design and quickly iterate a weather app over the course of a week, I decided to focus on the particular relationship that exists between Copenhageners and the sun. Suncatcher is not a regular kind of weather app, it's the kind that tells you where to find the best climate around you.

Using gaze to interact with space

The window can show different future scenarios for every object depending on the angle from which it is pointed at them. The simple act of looking at an object is the way to interact with it, and the only way to materialize alternate versions of its future.

Technology

We used Unity and Vuforia to overlay digital models to the real world and visualise them through a working iPad prototype. The app detects the object it's looking at by recognizing its fiducial marker and different scenarios are triggered depending on the marker's closest edge.
